The Commander went on ITV last night to tell the expectant masses all about leave over Christmas, when we were getting home, what date we would be leaving here, and so on. Or, rather, he told us he didn’t know much about anything, which wasn’t exactly surprising to anyone, and made a few educated guesses. Our return date looks like being between the 2 and 10 of December (hence the reference in the ode above), but our date for leaving here is still entirely dependent on the completion date for the runway at Port Stanley.

The other salient fact is that the Christmas leave retard party (of which I will almost certainly be one) will probably be taking split leave: most likely one week before main leave which is still programmed to start on the 17 of December, and two weeks afterwards. Though that doesn’t seem quite as good as a straight three weeks, in fact it is a good deal better, as I will actually get more time off, due to the extra weekend.

Following the Commander, we were treated to a quick brief from one of the Royal Engineers who is down here on the sort of explosive devices left by the departing Argentine soldiers. These ranged from nasty little things called ‘golf balls’ (they are the approximate size and shape of a golf ball, but you would be very ill-advised to take a club to one of them) which are quite capable of blowing your hand off, through the camouflaged green anti-personnel mines which were scattered quite indiscriminately everywhere, including built-up areas, and which we were cheerfully assured would take your leg off up to the knee, and, if you stepped on one and hit it with your heel, would give you compression fractures of the spine as a kind of no-cost extra feature, right up to the full-size, buried mines intended to take out Landrovers and the like, and which are positioned in fairly well-defined minefields around Port Stanley. We would probably be safe, we were told, provided we stayed in the town itself, and also provided we didn’t try to collect any souvenirs, like helmets, as most of them contain little surprises of one sort or another, the only common factor being the loud bang made when they go off. What little enthusiasm I had for going ashore here is fading away quite rapidly.

There was a sing-song in the Wardroom this evening, but as I was duty controller, and I was going to have to give a brief to the Alert Harrier pilots at 0520 on the morrow, and as I have absolutely no voice anyway, I retired to bed relatively early.
